Week of February 21, 2021
Dear Friends,
“Repent and believe in the Gospel,” are Jesus’ words as He opens the public ministry. We just heard these words on Ash Wednesday as we began our observance of Lent. The words and ashes remind us that we are entering a period of penance. Penance is an action of sorrow or contrition for sin. The purpose of penance is to help us express our contrition and to have a keener awareness of God’s mercy as we journey toward Easter. The next six weeks afford us the opportunity to seek God’s mercy, which is always available, and to be renewed in His cleansing love. The period of forty days is taken primarily from Jesus’ own forty days in the desert mentioned in today’s gospel reading. In the desert, Jesus fasted. While His body was weakened, His spirit was strengthened. We are invited, once again, to be renewed in strength through the period of penance. Our penitence is expressed primarily in three ways: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Through prayer, we grow in our relationship with God and an even stronger inner awareness of His love. Through fasting, we learn to rely on Him alone. Through almsgiving, we love as we are loved, freely giving to others, especially those in most need. Lent provides us a time of renewal and growth so that when we arrive at Holy Week we can enter more fully into the celebration of the Paschal Mystery, the passion, death and resurrection of our Lord.
The plans for the roof replacement are moving along. We have contracted with Kangaroof to do the work. Due to the pandemic, there are supply constraints, which is delaying the work. Work will commence as soon as possible. We will give notice through Flocknote and our other means of communications once we have a start date for the project. It is expected to take two to three weeks, weather cooperating. Thanks for your patience and understanding as we move forward with the work. Prayers to all for a great Lent.
God bless,
Monsignor Prior
